A medical certificate is a document issued by a licensed physician to certify the physical, mental, or illness condition of the person being examined, stating that they are able to work/study/travel/receive treatment, or in cases where the law or other agencies require medical evidence.
1. General medical certificate (1-2 pages)
• Used for short sick leave or to confirm illness
• Often used in educational institutions, companies or general employers
2. General medical certificate (5 pages)
• Used in cases where more detailed information is required, such as applying for a government job, being hired, continuing studies, applying for a driver’s license, applying for a government exam, etc.
• Must state that there are no diseases prohibited by law, such as dangerous tuberculosis, leprosy, drug addiction, etc.
3. Specialist medical certificate
• Medical certificate for traveling abroad (Visa / Work Permit)
• Psychiatric medical certificate (for therapy, doctor’s orders or use in lawsuits)

3. The doctor takes a health history
• Chronic diseases, medications taken, treatment history
4. The doctor issues a medical certificate
• Specify the information of the person being examined
• Summarize the examination results (good health/chronic diseases/precautions)
• Sign the doctor’s name and state the license number
Q: Can I get a medical certificate at a pharmacy or online?
• No, it must be issued by a licensed physician.
Q: How long is a medical certificate valid?
• Most are valid for no more than 1 month, but some agencies require 7 days (e.g., driver’s licenses).
Q: What if I am truly sick but the doctor does not issue a certificate?
• The doctor may have considered that the illness is not serious enough to stop working/studying.
• The patient can ask the doctor for an explanation or go to another medical facility for examination.
• Medical certificates have a validity period (usually not more than 1 month from the date of issue), but some agencies may specify a validity period of not more than 7 days.
• Must be issued by a licensed physician. If the certificate is fake, both the user and the issuer may be guilty of a crime.
• If it is a certificate for applying for a visa/working abroad, check with the destination embassy or agency to determine which form is required.
